Mental mastery – Re-discovering joy in your thinking

Dear Integral Meditators,

Everyone deserves the ability to take joy in and feel enthusiasm around their mind and thinking, but its a treasure that we have to hunt for and cultivate, not something we are handed on a plate. This weeks article gives a range of practical pointers to build a greater degree of mental mastery in your life.

If you enjoy it, then do check out the Mindfulness meditation for mastering & stilling the mind – Masterclass & Mini-retreat on Saturday 17th April, and the Meditation for beginners workshop on the 10th April. Both cover practices related to mental mastery that you can start to use right away!

As for this week, we have the  Full moon manifestation meditation on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In the spirit of joy in thining,

Toby

Re-discovering joy in your thinking – Five aspects of mindful mental mastery

Human beings are the mental Ferrari’s of the biological world. Our brains and minds are an incredibly powerful and creative instruments, which have enabled us to do incredible things. However, for many people this amazing capacity for thinking and conceptualizing is working against them. Most of us often feel:

  • That we cannot control the quantity or pace of our thoughts
  • That the content of our thoughts is often stressful or negative
  • We find ourself thinking about our problems in a way that makes them worse
  • Thinking feels exhaustive and addictive, we feel mentally overwhelmed and cognitively overloaded
  • The joy in our thinking is absent

Mental mastery, or mastery of the mind involves :

  • Exercising benevolent control over the quality and quantity of our thoughts
  • Turning useless, stressful ways of thinking into appropriately critical, useful ways of thinking
  • Avoiding cognitive overload and mental exhaustion
  • Learning to re-discover joy and enthusiasm in our thinking

Here are five fundamental mindfulness practices that can help you use your mind masterfully. Each can be found in different forms in different mindful traditions, eastern and western, ancient and modern. You might think of them as perennial, or fundamental practices:

Emphasize quality over quantity
Think less and slower. If you were to reduce the quantity of your thinking by say 10%, and increase the quality of your thinking by the same percentile, then you wold find that your mental environment will change substantially. More room, more positivity, less stress!

Think from appreciation and abundance
Daily, deliberate reflection on what has caused you joy, what makes your life rich, and what has happened that invites appreciation and gratitude. Practicing this as a discipline changes radically the inner context from which you see your life.

Observation and objectivity
Watching the content of your consciousness as an observer frees us from the bondage of over-identifying with our thoughts and thinking. ‘Stability comes from holding the position of the observer’ is a truth that means this type of mindful observation has been recommended by multiple meditation traditions, eastern and western for thousands of years.

Think critically
Thinking critically means making objective assessments according to the facts available to us. If we can reduce our negative critical thinking, particularly around ourselves, then we can start to use our critical thinking as a weapon for positive change in our life.

Don’t think
For many people this might seem like an ‘advanced’ skill that is out of their reach. However, for example if you were to commit  to stopping your thoughts for 5mins, 4-5times a week (see my old article on meditating cold turkey) you’d be surprised at how competent you could be at it.

Everyone deserves the ability to take joy in and feel enthusiasm around our mind and thinking, but its a treasure that we have to hunt for and cultivate, not something we are handed on a plate. Happy mindful hunting!

Combining psychic & psychological self-defence

“A strong self-concept makes you naturally able to defend yourself energetically, even if your awareness of subtle energy itself is not that pronounced or developed”

Dear Integral Meditators,

This weeks article looks at how you can begin to distinguish the disciplines of psychological and psychic self-defence and combine them using a simple but profound practice.

Heads up for the new Mindfulness meditation for mastering & stilling the mind – Masterclass & Mini-retreat on Saturday 17th April, and the Meditation for beginners workshop on the 10th April.

And finally, next weeks Full moon manifestation meditation on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In the spirit of subtle strength,

Toby

Combining psychic & psychological self-defence

Psychic and psychological self-defence is essentially the art of learning to defend yourself from a subtle energetic attack, either from within yourself or from outside. ‘Subtle energetic’ means it is not a physical attack, but an attack on the level of mind, emotions, and energy. In this article I want to speak about the differences between the psychic and psychological dimension, and then explain a simple exercise that combines the two.

Psychological self-defence
Is based around a healthy self-concept and image, plus clear boundary between self and other (separation and individuation). If you have basically healthy self-esteem, you trust yourself and are reasonably confident, then this will help your energetic resilience in the face of criticism, judgment, aggression or psychological manipulation by others. If you have clear relationship boundaries, are self-responsible and know your own inner wounds and weaknesses, then this further shores up your subtle energetic strength. A strong self-concept like this makes you naturally able to defend yourself energetically, even if your awareness of subtle energy itself is not that pronounced or developed.

Psychic self-defence
Is based around awareness of and ability to work with subtle energy and energy exchange. It implies the development of your inner senses and capacity to sense, see and perceive a subtle energy attack and defend yourself against it. It also involves the art of building your subtle energetic strength through different forms of meditation and mindfulness activity. In my experience you can make a big difference to your energetic strength in this way, but it will only go so far if you don’t back it up with work on your self-concept (ie: your psychological strength)

Standing in your own power (An exercise that mixes both psychic and psychological dimension of self-defence)
Imagine there is a flame, or ball of light (like a miniature sun) in your heart.  The substance of the ball or flame is made up of the subtle energy of your life-force, but it also symbolizes your own healthy psychological self-concept; your self-esteem, confidence and resilience. Imagine the flame/ball radiating energy around your body, creating a ball of light or energy bubble around you. This bubble of light is semi-permeable, meaning it lets in positive energy, but you cam block any negative energy attempting to come through. As you sit or stand, feel your body posture adjusting subtly to reflect and express your psychological well-being and heath. You are protected from negative energy around you and within the bubble your body, mind and heart are filled with the energy of psychological heath and strength.

So of course you can’t just completely change your psychological self-image with a visualization like this. But it will strengthen the existing psychological strength that you have, and start to combine it with the inner energetic awareness involved in psychic self-defence. This is a simple and effective begin combining your own practice of psychological and psychic self-defence.

Creating singularity through imagination

“To create singularity, strongly imagine that the past and future have ceased to exist, or have disappeared. All that remains is our experience of the immediate present; what appears to our senses, and the sensations on the body”

Dear Integral Meditators,

What if you were able to bring the energy of your body-mind into a focused, singular whole at will? What opportunities and possibilities might that open up for you? This weeks article  focuses on how we can start to do just that through meditation.

Quick heads-up for next weeks Spring Equinox balancing and renewing meditation, and if you know someone looking for a beginners meditation workshop then I’ve scheduled Get Your Meditation Practice Started Now (Live & Online) – The Shortest and Most Time Effective Meditation Workshop Ever for Saturday 10th April,
In the spirit of Singularity,

Toby

Creating singularity through imagination

As I often say, one of the main goals of meditation and mindfulness in any form is to create an integrated body-mind. Put another way it is to create a state where our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual energy are in the same place at the same time, in this moment. The following are two techniques that I have been using in combination recently and have found to be particularly effective, both in mediation, when trying to sleep after having been woken, or when my mind has been scattered and I want to gather it again.

Dropping the past and future
The first technique begins as an act of imagination. We strongly imagine that the past and future have ceased to exist, or have disappeared. All that remains is our experience of the immediate present; what appears to our senses, and the sensations on the body. Whatever is still appearing mentally we just experience as a present moment phenomenon, rather than allowing it to create a movement into the past or future. In this way we gather our energy into the present moment, into a singularity where our body-mind are present to each other.

Breathing and relaxing from center
As you engage in the first technique, you may notice the energy in your physical body becoming quite uncomfortable, almost like your mental energy, that would normally be moving around elsewhere feels a little ‘trapped’.  If you then find the approximate physical center of your torso, (somewhere around the level between your heart and solar plexus) you can then use the following technique to relax into and sustain the integration of your body-mind:
As you breathe in, breathe your awareness and energy into the centre of your body. As you breathe out, relax from that centre point, feeling your energy flowing outwards. Flowing out towards the surface of your body, and out into your energy field surrounding you. Continue this pattern of breathing, inhaling into centre, exhaling relaxing from centre. Allow the energy of your body-mind to integrate together more comfortably.
An optional addition to this second technique is to imagine in the centre of your body (where you are breathing in and out of) there is a point of light and energy. Imagine that this point of light and energy is your fundamental life-force and consciousness. As you breathe in, see it glowing brightly with power and energy. As you breathe out, imagine that light and energy expanding from your core out into the rest of your body, harmonizing and calming your body-mind.

Combine the first and second techniques, using them to hold the energy of your body-mind in a state of integration and singularity in the present moment. You can rest in this state, gather your power in it, and then depart in a focused way to your next activity when you are ready.

In case you missed it: Representing your values – Mindful self-trust

The feeling of trust invites integrity – The more we are able to access the innate feeling of trusting ourself, the more relaxed and confident we will then tend to feel about our ability to represent ourself and our values consistently and capably; we feel we are in integrity with ourself. It becomes a mutually enhancing circle of integrity and trust that we can use to feel energised and enthusiastic about our life, even and particularly when we are under pressure or navigating uncertainty.

Mindful Optimism

“We don’t need to wait for optimism to come to us, we can cultivate it and learn to generate it deliberately in and out of meditation. By doing so it can become a state that is instinctive and intuitive for us, rather than happening only occasionally and circumstantially.”

Dear Integral Meditators,

This weeks article is an exploration of the state of optimism. If you enjoy it, we will be meditating on it in the Tuesday and Wednesday meditation class.

Quick practical note, the timings for the Psychic Self-Defence Masterclass and Mini-retreat have now been adjusted to be both on Saturday 27th March.

In the spirit of optimism,

Toby

Mindful Optimism

Finding optimism
What is the state of optimism like? Here are a few characteristics that occur to me:

  • Joyful-ness, enthusiasm
  • A sense of being supported by tangible and intangible forces in the world
  • The feeling of a bright and possibly exciting future ahead
  • The reasonable expectation good things are going to happen to you, both now and in the future
  • An expansive, bright and comfortable feeling in the body, as if you belong in the world, and you can operate there with ease

If you think about times when you have felt optimistic in the past, you may start to notice that it is a bit like my description above. What other qualities characterize your own experience of optimism?
We don’t need to wait for optimism to come to us, we can cultivate it and learn to generate it deliberately in and out of meditation. By doing so it can become a state that is instinctive and intuitive for us, rather than happening only occasionally and circumstantially.

The Brightness of your life-force
To me optimism is very related to an overall sense of life-fullness. The experience is feeling full of life, with your life-force strongly present in the body, radiating out from your center into your energy field and into the world. Being optimistic makes you creative and solar, rather than passive and resigned.

Why optimism is difficult and pessimism is often easier
It can be easier to be pessimistic than optimistic. Reasons for this include:

  • Our natural psychological bias toward negative thinking and threat detection
  • Cognitive overload and emotional exhaustion
  • Anxiety
  • Previous traumas and negative experiences
  • A sense of being helpless in the face of the overwhelming problems of the world that are beyond our control

Each one of these factors is worth acknowledging within ourselves in order to release and let go of. The space and we create by doing this we can then begin to fill with conscious optimism.

Optimism, reason and reasoning
As well as the feeling of optimism, it’s well worth looking for verifiable facts in our life that make optimism reasonable and realistic. For example if I look at the state of my (own and my family’s) health, friendships and business right now there is a legitimate, factual basis for optimism. It’s important to have facts to back up our optimism, because pessimism, depression and anxiety often come as an overwhelming feeling. They ‘feel’ real, even if they have no basis.

Embodying and acting from optimism
We can back up the feeling of optimism by deliberately speaking optimistically and acting in a way that is consistent with optimism. For example, if I am talking to a friend about a problem that I am having, I usually make a point about why the challenge could be a good thing for me and all concerned. This way of speaking about it frames it in a way that makes it feel and seem like there is plenty of room for optimism, even if some aspects of what is happening are unpleasant or difficult.

Balancing optimism with critical thinking
Optimism makes it easier to face up to problems and challenges because we feel less intimidated by them. It is then easier to see drawbacks, problems, uncertainties in a critical and objective way, that doesn’t threaten our sense of optimism, and is indeed complementary to it.

PS: Life-fullness, which I mention in Paragraph 2 is also the style of coaching that I offer, the unique characteristics of which you can read about and watch here.

The more you have, the more you get (finding energy through mindset)

“If you trust yourself, then when you are under pressure, you will tend to trust your mind, your perception and ability to assess things well. This in turn means energy can flow easily in a relaxed manner through you, even when a lot is being asked of you”

Dear Integral Meditators,

Here is my second article on how you can find more energy by accessing particular states in meditation. This one examines four qualities; trust/integrity, kindness, resilience, & responsibility. If you missed it here is the first article, “Ever increasing loops of energy“.

My course starting next week Meditations for thriving and energy creation amidst Covid – A seven week course will be an experiential exploration of states that cause an ever increasing loop of energy within us. Do feel free to check it out!

And a short shout our for the  Live & Online Monthly Full Moon Meditation & Manifestation Session
next Saturday.

In the spirit of finding more,

Toby

The more you have, the more you get (finding energy through mindset)

This is the second article on states of mind that, the more you have of them the more energy you get. It has been very interesting to me to experiment over the years to see just how much I can increase my energy levels and heath using meditation, especially now when I am working full time, and looking after a baby at the same time ( with all the attendant sleep deprivation!). Here are four further states that I have found to be of particular value:

Trust and integrity – I’m putting these two together although they are large domains on their own right. Here is the basic formula: If you practice basic integrity, which is to say you think and act on accordance with your Core values, then you will both feel good about yourself, and you will trust yourself. If you trust yourself, then when you are under pressure, you will tend to trust your mind, your perception and ability to assess things well. This in turn means energy can flow easily in a relaxed manner through you, even when a lot is being asked of you. A complementary quality to self-trust is being aware of other people on your life whom you trust and can rely on. Simply appreciating the trust that exists between yourself and others is energizing and life affirming.

Kindness – If for a short time you sit in your own company, and gently extend the energy of care and kindness toward yourself and your body, you will quite quickly start to notice a restorative and regenerative feeling arising within you. Similarly, when there is an reciprocal exchange of kindness and consideration between yourself and others, the feeling created opens your body mind and heart to a new level of energy. So, the practice here is to ensure, particularly when you are feeling tired and under stress, to generate and sustain the presence of kindness in your energy system. One good counter balance or harmonizing quality for kindness is the quality of self-responsibility mentioned below.

Resilience – There are a few ways of thinking about resilience as a quality.  One useful one is to think of it as non-jadedness, or the ability to shrug off setbacks and start again. A resilience practice to experiment with is the ability to create and sustain a positive inner dialog with yourself – We have an inner conversation going on within our mind all the time. For sustainable peace of mind, inner resilience and creativity you need to be able to make that dialog positive and productive where possible, but also know how to deal with the negative, difficult challenging aspects of that conversation when it arises. The paradox here is that it is by skilfully accepting the feelings of discouragement that we feel we can actually go beyond them and recover our energy more quickly!

Taking responsibility – To be self-responsible is to grasp firmly that we are the person who is primarily responsible for fulfilling our destiny, and dealing with our problems and setbacks. Accepting that “no-one is here to save me” focuses my energy upon the challenge at hand, and creates a single-pointedness in my energy that is empowering and energizing. The counterweight or balancing state to responsibility is “connection“; opening to the support and good energy of other people. We can be take responsibility for our life without becoming an isolated island!

Self-responsibility – Becoming a self-determining entity

Dear Integral Meditators,

What is the link between mindfulness and self-responsibility? This weeks article explores the interface of these two.

In the spirit of self-determination,

Toby

Self-responsibility – Becoming a self-determining entity

We are surrounded by forces that are attempting to move us in one direction or another, capture our attention, stimulate desire, take our energy. We can experience this directly these days by going on our phone: Social media competes with email and Whatsapp for our attention. Advertisers seek to get our attention to buy their products. Often we go on our phone with one intention, but end up doing another thing! Of course, it’s not just our phone where this happens. Cultural and social forces place pressure upon us to conform, as does peer pressure and the fear of missing out. Amidst all of this what we really want, what will really make us happy, what we really seek to achieve can get completely lost amidst the distraction.
One if the things I find most inspiring about mindfulness is that it enables me to take charge of direction and action in my life. It enables me to become what Nathaniel Branden called a ‘Self-determining entity’.  What this means is someone who controls their destiny and direction, someone who is organised enough to stay focused on the face of distractions. In short, someone who is taking responsibility for their life.

Awareness and acceptance
Before we talk about being responsible, in mindfulness terms we need to talk about becoming more aware and accepting. It’s difficult to take responsibility for our life if we lack rudimentary self and environmental awareness, and if we are continually fighting with our reality rather than accepting it. You can read a bit more about these in my previous articles on self-awareness and acceptance.

What am I responsible for?
One simple guiding question I ask myself a lot is “What is it that I am responsible for in this situation?” I try to discern the things that I need to grasp and direct. For example, I am primarily always responsible for the care of my emotions, thoughts, and physical body. Other people can help and assist, but it is my responsibility. In a team context I need to know what my role is, and what I am responsible for communicating. Questioning in this way helps me to grasp and own responsibility for what is mine.

What am I not responsible for?
A second and often equally important question I ask is “What am I not responsible for here?“, or “What is the responsibility of others here?” Quite often without realizing it we take on responsibility for the problems, emotions and tasks of others without realizing we have done so. For example, I need to be there to support my daughter and what she is going through, but if I try and solve all her problems for her, I am actually denying her opportunities for growth and self-knowledge.
Also, some people are actively (tho often unconsciously) looking to evade responsibility for their challenges, and to push them onto someone else. We can easily find ourselves wrestling with and having our energy taken away by things that are, quite simply not our responsibility.

What do I need to take responsibility for today?
Think about what you face today, or over the next 24 hours. Mindfully frame it within the context of self-responsibility. What is your responsibility to own/solve/carry, and what is not? Your journey to responsible self-empowerment begins today.

Re-learning to non-think

“When you were a young child there were regular, natural periods of time when your mind would have been in a state of non-thinking presence, states of natural thought-free wonderment and wondering”.

Dear Integral Meditators,

Right now you may have difficulty stopping thinking, but it wasn’t always that way. This weeks article offers practical techniques for re-owning your non-thinking state, and reasons why you should be interested in doing so.
Some of the sessions for February are out, including a meditation on the triple Goddess next week, Meditating on the language of your shadow self, and meditation on the Lunar new year of the Ox. Full details below!

In the spirit of wonder and wondering,

Toby

Re-learning to non-think

Non-thinking is a skill you should have learned at school
When you were a young child there were regular, natural periods of time when your mind would have been in a state of non-thinking presence, a state of ‘child like wonder’. When we started education we were taught to fill our mind with content and process information. As we did so, without realizing it, less and less of our time was spent in a non-thinking state, and more and more in ‘thinking’ mode. By the time we get to adulthood, it seems as if we are stuck in thinking mode all the time, mostly without choice.

Non-thinking means to develop the skill of emptying your mind of content
So then as adults we need to remember the capacity that we had to non-think, to empty our mind of content periodically, and rest in a state of non-thinking. Meditation and mindfulness can help is do this.

Ways to empty your mind of content
Here are a few simple meditation techniques that you can use to re-awaken your non-thinking capacity. I outline them briefly, with links to previous articles on each method:

  • Watch the spaces between your thoughts – rather than watching your thoughts, pay attention to the spaces in between your thoughts, and gently try and extend them for a moment or two longer each time one appears. Gradually get used to relaxing with the non-thinking state as you get better at extending these ‘gaps’.
  • Practice belly breathing –  Bringing your attention down to your belly,  relax and try to gently focus your attention and awareness in this part of your body, letting go of excess conceptual thoughts and mental activity in your head.
  • Practice brain relaxation – The basic premise for the meditation is that your brain is your “organ of thought” so to speak, and so by bringing your physical brain into a start of deep relaxation it can actually be relatively easy and natural to calm the mind and move into a state of spacious non-thought.

The benefits of practising non-thinking
We regenerate the energy of our body-mind – A non-thinking state stops you burning energy, and helps you recover on all levels.
We recover from cognitive overload – Emptying your mind helps you find relief from the very information-age problem of processing too much information and having too many choices to make
We rediscover the joy of thinking – By dropping thinking for a while we can return to thinking with enthusiasm, appetite and clarity. When thinking is voluntary rather than an obligation, it becomes a joy!
We discover the subtle dimensions of our inner world, body & mind – By suspending your linear thinking mind for periods, you start to become aware of the subtle and intuitive mental and perceptual processes that lie underneath. We discover a space of wonder and wondering within the amazing inner world that we all have available to us when we stop thinking too much.
We connect to the formless, timeless dimension of consciousness and the self – Beneath the content of our conscious lies the unitive experience of consciousness itself, a world where you, me and everyone else merges into a greater Self that unites us in a greater experience of love, wisdom and togetherness. This reason alone is more than enough to train yourself in the literally timeless art of non-thinking.

Tuesday 2nd & Wednesday 3rd Feb, 7.30-8.30pm – Bright, Mother and Weaver Goddess meditation

About the class: This meditation is done at the time of an ancient Celtic festival called “Imbolc”, or the festival of Saint Brigid, who is both a venerated saint and a Goddess figure embodying both fire and water. It marks the beginning of spring, celebrating the new life that is emerging from the earth, and the lambs and other babies that are being born in the animal kingdom. It will be a gentle meditation where we will be communing with the Goddess in three aspects…

Intention, dedication, meditation (Start the new year on purpose)

“We can use our intention and dedication to start to radiate out ripples of good energy into the world. We may not know the precise effects they have, but we start to feel the energy we give returning to us many-fold in all sorts of different ways.”

Dear Integral Meditators,

Wishing you a 2021 full of wonder and wondering!
This weeks article looks at the power of intention and dedication, and how to integrate them into your meditation practice and life.

In the spirit of intention & dedication,

Toby

Intention, dedication, meditation

Why are you meditating?
Instead of just taking up meditation to as a way of dealing with stress, why not really articulate why you are doing it as a way of setting the energy when you start? For example, you might think:

“I am doing this meditation practice to bring strength, balance and calm to myself,
to bring benefit and wellbeing to my circle of influence (friends, family colleagues etc)
and to contribute to the wellbeing and balance of all beings on earth, and the Earth herself.”

If you spend a short while setting your intention in this way at the beginning of a session, you will find that the action of meditating feels quite different. It has a focused purpose and, although it is a simple act, you are sending the energy from it out into the world to bring conscious benefit and wellbeing. Setting your intention makes your meditation more powerful.

Directing through dedicating
Similarly, at the end of the meditation you can spend a few moments dedicating the energy of your meditation thinking or saying something like:

“May my meditation be a cause for my own inner strength and wellbeing,
May it enable me to bring benefit and love to my circle of influence,
And may it be a cause for the wellbeing and balance of all beings on Earth”

You can compose your own little intention and dedication verses if you like, using words that resonate for you. I always include these three levels; myself, my circle of influence and the global community as a whole. If you want to dedicate for particular groups of people, or towards the resolution of particular problems or challenges, of course you can do that too.

The tradition of intention and dedication
When I first began meditating seriously in the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition, intention and dedication was one of the first things that we were taught. Intention and dedication can be powerful meditations in themselves. Simply focusing for a few minutes on the intention to love and bring benefit to others or yourself can really change your experience of what you are going through. It gives you purpose and direction where previously there was none. In mindfulness terms the question we should be asking ourselves often and developing conscious intention around is:

“Why and for what am I doing this?”

Applying intention and dedication to other activities
Once you get into the habit of setting intention and dedicating in meditation you can start applying with it in other activities. You can eat with the intention of using the energy to benefit your family, work with the intention to benefit the wellbeing of customers and colleagues. You can dedicate your small positive actions in the day to the wellbeing of the planet. Using intention and dedication in this way we can start to radiate out ripples of good energy into the world. We may not know the precise effects they have, but we start to feel the energy we give returning to us many-fold in all sorts of different ways.

Your emotional feeling tones

“By starting to notice and to play around with your emotional tones, you discover that you can ‘change the song of your life’ like a composer re-working her compositions.”

Dear Integral Meditators,

This weeks article points out some playful ways to work with your emotional experience and range using mindfulness, I hope you enjoy it!
Last call for the 2021 New year releasing and inviting meditationThe Wednesday live class is already full, there are a few live slots for the Tuesday session, and of course online attendance is possible.

I am currently plotting the events for January 2021, watch this space!

In the spirit of composing your feelings,

Toby

Your emotional feeling tones

One way of thinking about emotions is that they are ‘The feeling tone associated with any experience’. By experience here I mean a broad range of things:

  • Different thoughts you have
  • Of a conversation or social interaction
  • Of a place; its atmosphere and ‘tone’
  • Of an image or memory that comes into your mind
  • In response to something that happens to you
  • Of a time of day

Each experience has a different feeling tone, like the note on a musical scale. Moreover, our own feeling tones are interacting with the emotional tones of other people and of our environment. Sometimes this creates a beautiful symphony, and sometimes this creates an almighty racket!
We are not in charge of the feeling tones of others, but we can start to become more aware of our own habitual feeling tones and patterns. If we do this we can then start to see how we can change our feeling tones and moods for the better, and put them into more beautiful ‘musical combinations’ with each other. Ways of starting to do this include:

  • Noticing the feeling tone that arise with particular thoughts, images and memories you have. Rather than looking at the content of the thought, look at the emotional tone of it.
  • With particular patterns of thought and image, you will notice that the feeling tones they produce for you are brighter and more harmonious. You can focus on deliberately holding these thoughts and images as a way of raising the vibration of your feeling tones.
  • You will notice that there are some images related to landscape and place that, when you think of them naturally raise your emotional tone. Likewise passages of music, images of characters in stories that you know (and so on) can all lift your overall feeling tone.
  • If you notice that you get stuck in a negative or ‘low level’ feeling tone, you can practice just experiencing it as a feeling tone, rather than taking the content too personally!
  • If you notice that a friend or colleague you spend time with really lifts your feeling tones, then deliberately open to them and allow their tones to affect you when you are with them. Similarly, if there is someone whose emotional tones bring yours down, then when you are with them, then practice ‘closing’ your energy to them in their company, so you are not so affected.

In a coaching session the other day I explained to a client that sometimes it is like your range of feeling tones is a bit like being one type of composer. Maybe if you notice are a more ‘serious’ composer like a Wagner or a Beethoven, you might like to introduce another composer into the mix. For example, you could practice creating more playful feeling tones like a Mozart or a Vivaldi. Or if your feeling tones are all ‘heavy metal’ you might like to practice creating feeling tones like a Prince, Taylor Swift or other more whimsical pop star. Of course this works the other way around; if you are all Taylor Swift and Mozart, maybe practice bringing a bit more gravitas into your feeling tones.
When you start to work mindfully with your feeling tones, it can be very creative and playful. By starting to notice and to play around with your emotional tones, you discover that you can ‘change the song of your life’ like a composer re-working her compositions.
Enjoy playing with your feeling tones!

Your bright shadow – The one who can do what you can’t

“The sum total of all the hidden strengths that you have within yourself but are in denial around is sometimes called the ‘bright shadow’”

Dear Integral Meditators,

This weeks article explores a topic that has been very present and important in my own practice for a good while now, the bright shadow. Some parts require careful reading, but I believe you’ll find it worth it if you do!

In the spirit of the bright & luminous,

Toby

Your bright shadow – The one who can do what you can’t

Your shadow is
A good working definition of our shadow self is: “All the parts of our personality and self that are unacceptable to our self-image”. Because these parts of ourself are unacceptable to our idea of who we think we are, most people repress and deny them psychologically, hence they get pushed into the ‘shadows’ of our unconscious mind. From their position in the unconscious, our shadow then tries to push its agenda from, without the awareness of the conscious mind.

Its not just your dark shadow that is unacceptable
A lot of the conversation about the shadow is about the so called ‘dark’ side of it. We repress violent parts of ourself, sometimes sexual elements, aspects of power, domination and a range of other destructive emotions. The specifics of course varies from person to person, as we all have a different self image.
But it is not just the so perceived ‘negative’ qualities that we repress. There are many strengths and ‘bright’ qualities that we also repress for the same simple reason: They are not part of who we think we are and what we think we are capable of, so we don’t identify with them, even though they are present within us. The sum total of all these hidden strengths within ourelf is sometimes called the ‘bright shadow’.

The bright shadow as an already present part of you
In the last couple of years the way in which I have been working with my own bright shadow is imagining it as an already complete and capable part of myself that I connect to in visualization, and then begin to imagine myself AS. This is a bit like Tantric meditation, where you accelerate the speed at which you achieve the results by imagining strongly that you have already achieved it!

A few examples
Here are a few aspects of my bright shadow that I have been working with in the last 12 months:

  • The bright part of me that is strong and confident in the face of uncertainty, and the twists and turns of fortune
  • The bright part of me that is happy being somewhat vulnerable and afraid, enjoying it and not having to hide behind so much ‘surface level’ manly strength
  • This week I wasn’t feeling well physically, as had to rest. I connected to that part of my bright shadow whose sense of confidence was not connected to physical well-being, and can navigate these few days relatively easily and happily despite the discomfort.

The basic method
In each of these examples the process is basically the same, I visualize my bright shadow, imagining him as already present whole and complete. I then study and relate to him. When ready I imagine myself AS him, living and experiencing this moment as if I fully possess his qualities and capacities.
